What is Pilates?

Pilates was originally a series of 34 exercises which were developed by Joseph Pilates, to be performed in sequence using and abiding by the following Six Principals:

  1. Centering
  2. Concerntration
  3. Control
  4. Precision
  5. Breath
  6. Flow

Joseph Pilates suffered from many childhood illnesses, and dedicated his life to improving & maintaining his health and fitness. This resulted in him deveoloping an exercise program he referred to as 'Contrology'.

Through experimenting with many different health and fitness approaches, he managed to strenghten his body and regain much of his health.

Developing his program, Joseph was inspired and influenced by many forms of fitness and artforms including Yoga, martial arts, dance, gymnastics and weight training.

Today Pilates, Yoga, martial arts and dance have all seen fusions from each other of their original practice forms, with variations and alterations to exercises with continuing development.

But even though the Pilates method today has evolved from Joseph Pilates' original 34 exercises, it continues to remain dedicated to the Classical Method and the application of the Six Principles throughout.
